Kyklopes
Cannabalism
Uncivilized
- "without a law to bless them" (IX, 111).
- "In ignorance leaving the fruitage of the earth in mystery
. . . they neither plow/ nor sow by hand" (112-13).
- "no muster and no meeting,/ no consultation or old tribal
ways" (117-18).
- Kyklopes ignores the laws of hospitality: he ignores
Odysseus's reminder that the Greeks are "beholden for your help,
or any gifts/ you give -- as custom is to honor strangers" (IX,
280-81).
Odysseus has the wit to tell Kyklopes his name is "Nohbdy." But
his pride wins in the end and he can't resist telling K. that he is
"Odysseus, raider of cities." Interesting that he calls himself
"raider of cities."
