Prerequisite: Freshman Composition/Rhetoric I and II
Textbooks: The Norton Anthology of English Literature I, seventh
edition
Course description: a general survey
of major works in British literature from its origin to the eighteenth century,
and an analysis of these works in their historical, cultural, and social contexts.
Withdrawal date: Nov. 16. Please remember that dropping is an administrative procedure. Your instructor cannot drop you. Failure to withdraw from a class will result in a final grade on your transcript of F.
Americans with Disabilities Act Compliance: It is the policy of Collin County Community College to provide reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals who are students with disabilities. This College will adhere to all applicable Federal, State and local laws, regulations and guidelines with respect to providing reasonable accommodations as required to afford equal educational opportunity. It is the student's responsibility to contact the faculty member and/or the Services for Students with Disabilities at 881-5950 in a timely manner to arrange for appropriate accommodations.
Religious Holidays: In accordance with Section 61.911 of the Texas Education Code, CCCC will allow a student who is absent from class for the observance of a religious holy day to take an examination or complete an assignment scheduled for that day within a reasonable time. Students are required to file a written request with each professor within the first 15 days of the semester to qualify for an excused absence. A copy of the state rules and procedures regarding holy days and the form for notification of absence from each class under this provision are available from the Registrar's Office.
Method of Evaluation:
If I don't receive any work from you in the first two weeks of the semester, I will not take any other work from you: in short, you must drop the class. Please see drop date listed in this document. This is not a self-paced course; we have due dates and "attendance" on the Discussion Group just as in any onsite course.
20% response papers: these may be submitted by an attachment (Word) sent via E-mail. I want you to think about the text and answer questions before we discuss the material in depth. In this way, I hope you will learn to think for yourselves. 1 page typed.
If you have questions about the response paper assignment, please write the question on the "Discussion Group" on the writer's site we are studying; thus, everyone may see your question and my reply and this interchange may answer others' questions. You may want to use the "Discussion Group" to brainstorm your response to the readings before writing the response you will e-mail to me for a grade. Feel free to take advantage of fellow students' responses on the " Discussion Group." Any question about the material we are studying may be posted on the "Discussion Group." Students are encouraged to give their responses and I will always give mine.
Response papers are graded for content not form, so you don't need a formal organization. I will not grade off for grammar on these. Length should be one page.
30% essays. Correct grammar and formal organization are required. Please
e-mail the 2 essays in a Word attachment. Once again, I encourage you to brainstorm
your essays on the "Discussion Group" and use student responses or
mine to refine your essays. Essays are short: 2-3 pages long. Please look at
example.
