Syntax: "be" verbs - Editing Guidelines
Always edit and revise "be" verbs (is, are, was, were, be, being) unless they appear for emphasis or serve as an equal sign (such as: "Steve Jobs is a genius", i.e. Steve Jobs = a genius) especially "helping" verbs:

Example (wordy):  The manager is referring to his other departments rather than to the entire company.

Edit/Revision (concise):  The manager refers to his other departments rather than to the entire company.

Example 2 (wordy):  The president is describing the condition of the entire market.

Edit/Revision (concise):  The president describes the condition of the entire market.
